Hilton Torrey Pines Review: I'd Only Stay Here for the Golf

Every hotel doesn't need to be amazing.

Sometimes a hotel simply needs to serve a purpose.

After my stay at Hilton Torrey Pines, that's exactly how I would describe it.

If you're traveling to play Torrey Pines Golf Course and want a reasonably priced hotel nearby, it may work for you.

For almost everyone else, I think there are better options.

First Impressions

The view is beautiful.

Unfortunately, that was one of the few things that impressed me.

Upon arrival, the lobby felt dated and had a noticeable odor that wasn't particularly pleasant.

Check-in, however, was excellent.

The staff acknowledged my Hilton status, accommodated an early check-in for one of our rooms, and made the arrival process easy.

Since we were heading to the Safari Park that day, being able to drop our bags before leaving was appreciated.

Why We Chose This Hotel

To be clear, we didn't book Hilton Torrey Pines expecting a luxury experience.

We chose it because:

  • Rates were under $200 per night

  • We wanted to be closer to the Safari Park

  • We didn't want to drive all the way into downtown San Diego

  • We needed connecting rooms for our family

For those reasons, it checked the boxes.

Unfortunately, the hotel itself did not.

The Rooms

We booked two connecting rooms: one king room and one room with two queen beds.

The rooms featured:

  • Partial ocean views

  • Balconies

  • Plenty of space

Unfortunately, almost everything else felt dated.

Some of the issues we encountered included:

  • Loose electrical outlets

  • A broken balcony door lock

  • Noticeable wear throughout the rooms

I was honestly surprised by how run down the accommodations felt.

While I don't expect perfection at this price point, I do expect basic maintenance issues to be addressed.

Pools and Grounds

The hotel has one main pool shared by all guests.

During our stay, the weather was cool enough that the pool area wasn't particularly busy.

The setting itself is attractive thanks to the surrounding cliffs and ocean views.

However, it's important to understand that this is not a beach resort.

While you'll enjoy ocean views, there is no direct beach access.

You're essentially looking at the ocean rather than interacting with it.

Dining

Our dining experience was mixed.

We grabbed items from the coffee shop and later stopped by the main restaurant for after-dinner drinks.

The service at the restaurant was painfully slow.

Not just leisurely vacation slow.

Genuinely slow.

It became one of the more memorable parts of the stay for all the wrong reasons.

Service

Interestingly, service was probably the strongest part of the hotel.

The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

What disappointed me more was the property's response to guest feedback.

After receiving a post-stay survey, I shared that I wouldn't return based on our experience.

The response I received essentially said:

"We're sorry to hear that. We hope to see you again soon."

It was clear no one had actually read what I wrote.

That lack of attention felt representative of the overall experience.

Who Should Stay Here?

There is exactly one traveler I would actively recommend this hotel to:

An avid golfer planning to play Torrey Pines Golf Course.

That's it.

For that traveler, the location is convenient, the rates can be reasonable, and you'll be close to one of the most famous public golf courses in the country.

For everyone else, I would look elsewhere.

What I'd Book Instead

If your budget allows, I would personally choose one of several nearby luxury resorts instead.

The difference in quality and overall experience is significant.

Even though those properties cost more, I believe they deliver far greater value.

Final Thoughts

I don't enjoy writing negative reviews.

But I also think honest reviews are important.

Hilton Torrey Pines wasn't terrible.

It simply wasn't good.

The rooms felt neglected, the dining experience was disappointing, and nothing about the property made me want to return.

The views are beautiful.

The golf course next door is world-famous.

But if you're not visiting specifically to play golf, I think your money is better spent elsewhere.
