Why Ritz-Carlton Bacara Is One of California's Best Luxury Resorts

When people ask me for a luxury California beach resort recommendation, there are only a handful of properties that immediately come to mind. After a recent stay at Ritz-Carlton Bacara Santa Barbara, I can confidently say it deserves a spot on that list.

What impressed me most wasn't just the beautiful setting or ocean views—although there are plenty of both. It was how seamlessly the resort balanced luxury with genuine family-friendliness. That's a combination that's surprisingly difficult to find.

Many luxury resorts cater primarily to couples. Others focus heavily on families. Bacara manages to do both exceptionally well.

Stayed: Memorial Day Weekend

First Impressions

The first thing that struck me upon arrival was the sheer size of the property.

Bacara is sprawling. The resort sits atop dramatic oceanfront bluffs with beautiful landscaping, multiple pools, walking paths, and enough space that even on a busy holiday weekend it never felt crowded.

Despite its size, everything was immaculately maintained. The grounds were pristine, and the resort immediately felt polished and luxurious without being stuffy.

Check-in was smooth, and the front desk team was genuinely welcoming. That level of service continued throughout our stay.

The Location

One thing to understand before booking Bacara is that this is not a downtown Santa Barbara hotel.

The resort sits roughly 15 minutes north of the main Santa Barbara attractions. If your goal is to spend your days walking State Street, browsing shops, and hopping between restaurants, this may not be the ideal location.

If, however, you're looking for a destination resort where the property itself is the attraction, Bacara excels.

The beach is directly on-site, the grounds are beautiful, and many guests spend the majority of their stay without ever leaving the resort.

For most travelers, I would recommend having a car.

The Rooms

We booked a standard room with two queen beds and were pleasantly surprised by how fresh everything felt.

While Bacara is not a new property, nothing about our room felt dated. In fact, that's one of the things that stood out most during our stay. Many coastal California resorts begin to show their age over time. Bacara has clearly invested in maintaining the property.

Our room featured:

  • Ocean views from the balcony

  • A spacious bathroom with separate tub and shower

  • Comfortable beds

  • Plenty of outdoor space to enjoy the scenery

I would happily book the same room category again.

Pools and Beach

For many travelers, this is where Bacara really shines.

The resort offers four pools, including:

  • An adults-only pool

  • A spa pool

  • Two family-friendly pools

Even during Memorial Day Weekend, finding chairs wasn't particularly difficult, which is becoming increasingly rare at luxury resorts.

The beach itself is beautiful, although the Pacific Ocean here can be quite cold. We spent more time enjoying the views and exploring the shoreline than swimming.

The variety of pool options means couples can enjoy a quieter atmosphere while families still have plenty of space to spread out.

It's one of the reasons Bacara works so well for such a wide range of travelers.

Dining

We dined at Marisella for dinner and enjoyed breakfast at Lulio.

Dinner was the highlight.

Marisella is not only beautiful but delivered one of our favorite meals of the trip. The setting alone is worth experiencing, particularly at sunset.

Breakfast was also excellent, though ours was included through advisor benefits, making the experience even easier.

As a travel advisor, one of the advantages I can often provide clients is complimentary breakfast and additional perks that add meaningful value to a stay like this.

Traveling with Kids

As a parent, I'm always evaluating luxury resorts through a family lens.

Some properties tolerate children.

Others genuinely welcome them.

Bacara falls into the second category.

Our children enjoyed the pools, the beach, and simply exploring the expansive grounds. The resort never felt stressful or restrictive for families.

At the same time, couples seeking a romantic getaway wouldn't feel out of place here either.

That's a difficult balance to achieve, and Bacara does it exceptionally well.

I would absolutely return as a family.

Service

The service was one of the strongest aspects of our stay.

One moment that stood out happened at checkout. The front desk associate who checked me in recognized me by name and remembered my room number days later.

Small details like that matter.

Luxury service isn't about grand gestures. It's about making guests feel seen and cared for throughout their stay.

Compared to other luxury resorts I've visited, Bacara's service ranks near the top.

Who Should Book Ritz-Carlton Bacara?

I would confidently recommend Bacara to:

  • Families looking for a luxury California beach getaway

  • Couples seeking a romantic weekend

  • Multi-generational family trips

  • Wellness-focused travelers

  • Babymoon travelers

  • Friends looking for a relaxing escape

The only travelers I might steer elsewhere are those who want a highly walkable Santa Barbara experience or guests with mobility limitations. The property is large, spread out, and includes some significant elevation changes.

Is Ritz-Carlton Bacara Worth the Cost?

In my opinion, yes.

We visited during a holiday weekend when rates were elevated, and I still felt the experience justified the price.

Between the service, accommodations, dining, pools, beach access, and overall atmosphere, Bacara delivers the type of luxury experience travelers hope for when booking a special getaway.

Not every expensive resort feels worth the money.

Bacara does.

Final Thoughts

There are very few resorts that I would comfortably recommend to both a couple celebrating an anniversary and a family traveling with children.

Ritz-Carlton Bacara is one of them.

The property is beautiful, the service is exceptional, and the overall experience feels polished from start to finish.

Would I return?

Without hesitation.
