Sometimes a hotel is exactly what you booked it for.
And sometimes it's so much better than you expected that you completely change your itinerary around it.
That is what happened to us at JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa.
We came to Venice from Rome, where we had stayed at a hotel that was perfectly nice and technically allowed children—but it wasn't, by any stretch, kid-friendly.
JW Marriott Venice was supposed to be the retreat portion of our trip.
After the heat, crowds and hustle of Rome, we wanted to slow down. We wanted space. We wanted luxury without having to constantly be "on." We wanted the kids to have things to do while we actually relaxed.
It was exactly what we were looking for.
Actually, it was better.
So much better that we extended our stay before we'd even finished our first night.
And then we cancelled Milan.
Goodbye, Milan. Hello, more Venice.
To be fair, this wasn't some dramatic decision to abandon a city we'd been eagerly anticipating.
Milan was more of an itinerary city for us. It fit. We thought, why not? We didn't have a particularly strong pull toward it, but it seemed like a logical addition to the trip.
And then we arrived at JW Marriott Venice.
Within hours, we were looking at each other thinking:
Why are we leaving?
So we ditched the plan.
We started looking at how we could reroute our flights and stay longer.
No knock on Milan. It just didn't have enough of a pull for us to give up another night here.
Although, admittedly, The Last Supper came pretty close to convincing us.
But ultimately, we'd rather have another day of this.
And that says a lot.
From Rome to the ultimate exhale
The transition from Rome to JW Marriott Venice couldn't have been more perfect.
Rome was everything you want Rome to be—beautiful, historic, energetic, chaotic, hot and completely captivating.
But after several days of that, we were ready to breathe.
JW Marriott Venice sits on its own private island in the Venetian Lagoon, which means you get the incredible experience of being in Venice without having to stay in the middle of all the action.
You take a boat into the city.
You explore.
You come back.
And suddenly, everything is quiet.
The gardens are lush. The property is spacious. There are pools, restaurants, beautiful outdoor spaces and plenty of places to simply sit and do absolutely nothing.
It felt like a true resort vacation after a city stay.
Exactly what we wanted.
And then they upgraded us...
We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a La Maisonette Loft Suite, and this may be one of the room categories that sticks with me most.
It's a beautiful bilevel suite with a separate living room and what the hotel calls a terrace.
But "terrace" doesn't really do it justice.
It feels much more like your own private backyard.
Having that additional living space made such a difference for our family. We could spread out. The kids could have their own space. We weren't all sitting on top of each other in one hotel room.
And after traveling with children, you really start to appreciate the luxury of having a door between you and the living room.
The suite was beautiful, but it was the combination of space + privacy + outdoor living that made it feel so special.
This is genuinely family-friendly luxury
I want to emphasize this because there is a huge difference between a hotel that allows kids and a hotel that is actually welcoming to families.
JW Marriott Venice is the latter.
One of the things that really impressed us was the kids' club.
There are three scheduled activities each day, with programming that includes things like LEGO time, bracelet making, clay building, cooking classes and movies.
And you have flexibility, too. Kids can be dropped off for an hour or stay for the full day.
Our kids only spent an hour there on two different days, but they had a great time both times—and more importantly, they were excited to go back.
That gave us a little time to enjoy the resort without them, while they were genuinely having fun rather than simply being parked somewhere.
It's exactly the kind of thoughtful family amenity that makes a luxury hotel actually work for parents.
We never felt like we had to apologize for having children with us.
The property is beautiful and sophisticated, but the kids aren't an afterthought.
Couples? Absolutely.
Another thing I love about this property:
You absolutely do not have to be traveling with children to have an incredible experience here.
There are room categories and spaces that feel completely different depending on the type of trip you're planning.
The Residenza, for example, is one of the coolest hotel room types I've seen in a long time—and it's designed specifically for two guests.
It has its own private outdoor space that feels like a little private yard, complete with a plunge pool. Some configurations also offer direct water views.
It is incredible.
I could very easily see this being a phenomenal choice for a honeymoon, anniversary, couples' getaway or simply a splurge-worthy Venice stay.
And then there's the rooftop restaurant, which has a lounge and an adults-only pool, along with weekly DJ nights.
So no—this isn't just a family resort.
It's a property that manages to serve very different types of travelers without compromising the experience for any of them.
The people made the experience even better
I also have to give a very special shoutout to the team.
Rafael and Marco in the Uliveto/Retreat lobby were absolutely wonderful. They were warm, attentive and genuinely made us feel welcomed throughout our stay.
And Cecilia from the sales team deserves her own mention.
As a travel advisor, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do a site visit with Cecilia, and she gave me a fantastic look at what the property can offer my clients.
She walked me through so many different room types, spaces and experiences, and I kept finding myself thinking:
This place has everything.
And that's what makes a property like this so valuable to me professionally.
I'm not just recommending a hotel because it photographs well.
I've now seen the different accommodations, understand who each room category is best suited for, experienced the property firsthand and have a much better sense of what kinds of trips it can accommodate.
That makes a huge difference when I'm matching a hotel to a client.
The biggest compliment I can give it
We had a plan.
Rome → Venice → Milan.
Instead:
Rome → JW Marriott Venice → stay longer.
We loved it enough to give up an entire destination just to have another night here.
And I don't think that's because Milan wasn't worth seeing.
It's because this property gave us something we didn't realize we needed quite so badly:
permission to stop.
No rushing to the next train.
No packing up again.
No checking into another hotel.
No trying to squeeze another destination into the itinerary just because we had planned it.
Just more time here.
More time by the pool.
More time in our suite.
More time watching the kids have fun.
More time enjoying the property.
More time doing absolutely nothing.
And sometimes, especially on an Italian vacation, doing nothing is exactly the luxury you came for.
My take
If you're planning Venice—especially if you're traveling with children—I would absolutely put JW Marriott Venice on your list.
And if you're a couple looking for something romantic, private and a little unexpected, I wouldn't overlook it just because it's a resort.
The combination of private-island setting, beautiful accommodations, incredible outdoor spaces, genuinely family-friendly programming, adults-only offerings, easy access to Venice and exceptional service makes this property unusually versatile.
For us, it was supposed to be the place where we slowed down after Rome.
Instead, it became the place we didn't want to leave.
So much so that we cancelled Milan.
And honestly?
I have zero regrets.
